We investigate noncovalent strategies (electrostatics, hydrogen-bonding, halogen/chalcogen bonding, and encapsulation) to selectively recognise anions, cations, and ion-pairs in challenging media. Projects emphasize receptor design (including catenanes and multi-dentate macrocycles), the role of counterions in modulating affinity, and the translation of sensing motifs into aqueous-compatible sensors and extraction systems. This theme is grounded in peer-reviewed studies from the group showing enhanced anion recognition by ammonium [2]catenanes and halogen-bonding approaches for strongly competitive media.
